If you catch yourself wondering what a VPN connection is, you are not alone. VPN services are quickly becoming a mandatory part of online life, yet many people do not fully understand what a VPN is and what exactly a VPN does. No matter where in the world you happen to be, the U.S., Germany, or anywhere else, the answers are always the same – albeit in different languages.
So, what is a VPN, or as they say in Germany, “Was ist VPN verbindung?” Put simply, it is an encrypted connection to a network of remote servers that allows users to access the internet in anonymity. A VPN acts as a middle man between he requester and the requestee.
Still wondering what a VPN is? Are you travelling to Germany anytime soon? If so, the term for “what is a VPN connection” is “was ist eine VPN verbindung” in German. You don’t have to be going to Deutschland to gather information on VPNs, though. Anytime and anywhere is a good time to learn more about what VPNs are and how they can benefit you.
What is a VPN
to get into a bit more detail about what VPN actually is, the concept has to be broken down a bit more than what we previously did. A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, as a service that is provided through private companies. These companies provide servers through which users can send and receive requests over the Internet. Acting as middlemen, VPN services taking user requests on an encrypted channel, see the requests through, and then send them back to the user in an encrypted package. What that means is that when a person uses a VPN service, all of their Internet traffic is scrambled as soon as it leaves their personal device.
There are, of course, a few things to keep in mind when comparing VPN services as they are not all the same. Some VPN companies are purely for profit and offers some of the best services in the industry, while others provide a free service along with limited access and speeds. Also, some VPN services are better at different types of Internet traffic such as with getting past China’s great firewall and accessing streaming sites like Netflix. As a general rule, only the premium services will suffice for higher level use case scenarios and going with a cheap or free version of the VPN will likely and you up with a service that has cut corners that should not have been cut.
What can one use a VPN service for?
VPN service can be used for many things and for many reasons. There are many cases where people use VPN services for everyday type tasks, as well as high-level security situations. Whatever the reasons people may have for using VPNs, the same benefits for using a VPN is true for all of them.
For one thing, a VPN service masks your IP address. There are many reasons for masking one’s IP address, but some of the more common benefits are avoiding Internet trackers, hackers, and regional blocks set up by governments.
Speaking of regional blocks, governments aren’t the only ones who restrict users from accessing certain information. Many services found online will only do business with people from certain countries. If you are not in one of those countries and you still would like to access a country-specific site, the only way to do that is to change your IP address to the country of the site you are trying to access. Services like the popular American television site Hulu is perfect example of such a site, though there are many.
The final, and arguably most important reason for using a VPN are the security features. With all traffic going in and out of the VPN servers being fully encrypted it is very difficult for governments, third-party onlookers, and hackers to get a hold of any information that you do not want them to have. VPN services are easy to set up and use and the benefits are many, while there are almost no reasons not to use one.
